Hypersensitive? Especially During Your Period?

There’s a lot of talk these days about hypersensitive or highly sensitive people. Are you one of them?

I am, specifically an empath. This means that, along with heightened sensitivity to things like noise, food, substances (like coffee or even green tea), or information overload, I am acutely sensitive to the energies of people, places, things, and even thoughts and emotions. Often, I unconsciously absorb these energies, leading to sudden shifts from feeling happy to becoming anxious, fearful or angry without any apparent reason in my personal world.

However, as a Cycle Success Catalyst, I’ve also observed that my heightened sensitivity fluctuates with my hormonal cycle phases.

Dynamic Phase (Post-Menstruation)

During my dynamic phase, I can handle a significant amount of social interaction because my energy is radiating outward. I can spend time outside, engage with people, be active, and multitask without feeling overwhelmed.

It takes much more to overload me during this phase, as rising estrogen levels are playing in my favor, endowing me with extra strength, energy and resilience.

Ovulation Phase

In the ovulation phase, I even actively seek social connections. I feel truly joyful when my dog meets another dog, giving me the chance to chat with the owner and enjoy personal human contact. I love talking with my team and sessions with my clients. And even though they tell me about their troubles, I seem not to take it on.

My energy and my mood remain positive and outwardly oriented, making me less susceptible to absorbing „negative“ energies from others. I shine like the sun, outshining any darkness that comes close. The high level of estrogen is responsible, as it also stimulates the production of serotonin, the happiness hormone.

Ovulation phase is fine for HSP women

Premenstrual Phase

During the premenstrual phase, particularly in its second half, we women often turn inward, becoming more susceptible to external energies. Personally, I find myself easily agitated or fatigued when interacting with others, especially in crowded places like supermarkets or during phone conversations. Many women, myself included, become more sensitive to smells, noise, and overall overwhelm during this phase.

Speaking of hormones, it’s the decrease in estrogen and later progesterone levels that lead to the lowering of serotonin, contributing to mood swings and feelings of anxiety or even depression alongside other unpleasant PMS symptoms.

My best medicine for this phase is to be outside, walk barefoot, enjoy long walks in nature, evade crowded areas, create, do something with my hands (gardening and picking weeds is especially therapeutic).

Menstrual Phase

The menstrual phase is a total energy downturn. Loud sounds become intolerable, and we crave solitude. Even simple tasks or human interactions can feel burdensome.

In this phase, women are energetically and emotionally vulnerable to absorbing everything around them, often unconsciously, and without adequate protection from negative energies. I strongly advise women to avoid large shopping malls, post offices, and similar places during their period if possible, as these environments can be draining. While shielding and similar energy protection techniques may offer some relief, they’re not always completely effective.

In some cultures, like in Bali, women are not allowed to attend churches or public gatherings during their period, and in others, they spend time in designated „red tents.“ While these practices may seem chauvinistic, in my view, they actually protect us!

You might even recall instances when someone mentioned having the flu, and suddenly you felt like you were coming down with the same symptoms. This phenomenon is something I’ve experienced personally many times and heard about from many other women over the years working with hundreds of them. The reason is simple: You are really able to pick up on the feelings of others!

Interestingly, during my bleeding days, I can drink a bit more alcohol—like five sips of my father’s secret vermouth (he’s a winemaker)—instead of my usual one sip. But beware: most women experience worse hangovers when drinking during their menstrual phase than in other phases.

Nevertheless, the menstrual phase has one great aspect: Thanks to our heightened sensitivity, we become immensely intuitive and can tap into our Soul’s wisdom, using it for our own benefit as well as the benefit of our business, our loved ones, and also our clients. During this phase, we embody the Oracle archetype and are a true well of knowledge!

My recommendation for this phase is, once again, spending time in nature (but taking leisurely walks!), getting enough sleep and rest, and allowing ourselves time to daydream, which connects us with our Soul and nourishes our energy body. As simple as these recommendations may sound, they are truly the easiest and best ways to feel better!

Best medicine? Spend time in nature!

Although modern psychology suggests that approximately 15–20% of the population is hypersensitive, I believe this percentage is much higher, especially among women and particularly during their menstrual period.

However, these hypersensitive individuals and empaths play a vital role in the evolution of our species towards creating a more genuinely „human“ society without arguments, wars and competition, embracing cooperation, collaboration and compassion.

If you are one of them, being hypersensitive is indeed your true strength. Embrace it, accept it, and use it for the well-being of us all!
